Upcoming certification of Safran’s new APU

The test campaign of the Safran Power Units (Safran) SPU300[BA] is progressing successfully towards its upcoming TSO* certification. This state-of-the-art auxiliary power unit (APU) especially designed for long-range, high-performance business jets, just completed closed loop EMI** testing, effectively concluding the certification test campaign for TSO.
The SPU300[BA] had already completed key tests such as tailcone compatibility, containment and altitude starting/operation. More recently, the 150-hour endurance test was successfully completed in April 2017. This was an important milestone in the certification process, demonstrating the high reliability and durability of the APU while operating at high loads and temperatures. The SPU300[BA] performed flawlessly, and a post-test inspection of the hardware showed it was in excellent condition.
The test program, which has been performed in Toulouse (France) and San Diego (California, USA), included seven APUs and two prototype tailcones.

Since November 2016, the SPU300[BA] has been undergoing parallel flight testing as part of the Bombardier Global 7000 business jet certification campaign. The SPU300[BA] has accumulated over 1300 operating hours and more than 1000 starts across four flight test aircraft to date.
The SPU300[BA] is undergoing the most rigorous testing required by the FAA and will be certified to the latest standard. In addition to the TSO certification requirements, the SPU300[BA] will be certified for extended-range operations with two-engine airplanes (ETOPS). FAA certification is expected by the end of 2017.
The SPU300[BA] has a power-to-weight ratio that is the best in its class. The SPU300[BA], which has demonstrated reliable starting up to 45k feet, provides electrical power up to 60 kVA at 45k feet and 40 kVA up to 51k feet. On the ground, the SPU300[BA] provides ample air for conditioning the cabin and starting the main engines while providing the electrical power required to meet the demands of the aircraft. In addition to its industry leading performance capability, the SPU300[BA] is equipped with a leading edge control system, allowing for effective troubleshooting and monitoring of key parameters for preventive maintenance.
*A Technical Standard Orders TSO is a minimum performance standard for specified materials, parts, and appliances used on civil aircraft.
